A grassfire broke out on the southwest portion of Taal Volcano Island on Tuesday, directly affecting the Binintang Munti (VTBM) Observation Station, according to PHIVOLCS.
"The station's IP camera, as well as the IP camera at VTAG in Agoncillo, Batangas, recorded the fire's initial spread at 11:24 AM," PHIVOLCS said.
The VTBM had previously been affected by similar grassfires on March 3, 2023, and May 2, 2024, which "were started by kindling."
"PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring the situation and is coordinating with the DRRMCs of Batangas Province," the agency added.
Alert Level 1 remains in effect over Taal Volcano.
Meanwhile, personnel from the Coast Guard Sub Station (CGSS), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) in San Nicolas swiftly responded to the incident.
Based on a preliminary assessment by BFP San Nicolas, the fire affected approximately three to five hectares.
