Gonzales explains absence after defense secretary term
by John Dexter Tilo01 February 2022

Where did presidential aspirant Norberto Gonzales go after his stint as defense secretary in 2010?

Gonzales, who was the former Cabinet official of ex-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, told DZRH that he went to establish an "interim arrangement" with bishops during what he claimed was a period of "bad governance" during the administration of late President Noynoy Aquino.

According to Gonzales, there were possibilities of instability and threats because Aquino was not governing the country well during his term.

He claimed during Tuesday's Bakit Ikaw: The DZRH Presidential Job Interview that if governance and major policies are not aligned with the moral values needed by society, it will not head in a good direction.

(If our policies are not coherent and do not understand the kind of society that we want, it’s still nothing.)

So to avoid the possibility of military takeover due to instability, he said that he established an "interim arrangement" with bishops.

(So what I did was, I said, if ever something happens to the government, let us not allow it to fall in the hands of the military.)

(I said, maybe what we can do, we can combine those who understand governance and leaders of religion for a moral foundation, let us talk, and if ever something happens, at least we have an interim arrangement that we can talk about.)

"Naging abala ko dun, abalang-abala ako doon."
