A fire broke out in a residential area along Mel Lopez Boulevard in Moriones, Tondo on Monday.
In a report by RH 29 Boy Gonzales, a massive fire in Barangay 123 began at around 2 PM. Responders arrived swiftly at the scene; the fire was declared under control at around 3:05 through the joint efforts of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Fire volunteers, as well as residents.
The narrow alley leading to the area on fire proved a hindrance, Gonzales said. Residents recovering bulky items such as washing machines and dressers could only enter and exit once at a time. Firefighters had to link hoses together to extend their reach towards the blaze or climbed onto rooftops to aim.
Residents carried their belongings out onto Mel Lopez Boulevard, just beyond the conflagration. Two coffins were brought to the other side of the road.
The fire was successfully extinguished by 3:15. As of the time of reporting, BFP Manila was still determining how many houses were lost to the fire, and how many families were affected.
Fire trucks crowded the area, necessitating a counterflow for the traffic. This left only two lanes usable on the southbound lane.
