At least 35 passengers sustained injuries after a fast craft collided with a cargo vessel on Sunday afternoon, May 21, along Mactan Channel, Cebu.

In an incident report, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said the mishap happened at around 3 PM after the fast craft SuperCat MV St. Jhudiel, which was heading to Cebu City, experienced steering and engine failure and collided with cargo vessel LCT Poseidon 23.

The fast craft was reportedly carrying 197 passengers and crew while LCT Poseidon was transporting 17 rolling cargoes and 20 drivers when the incident happened.

A passenger of SuperCat was able to record a video before the collision happened.

The Cebu City Command and Control Center team along with PCG personnel immediately provided the necessary assistance.

In an official statement, SuperCat management said its sister company Cebu Pier 1 was able to deploy a tug boat that assisted the fast craft, and injured passengers were brought to the nearest hospital.

SuperCat extended its apologies and assured that all injured passengers are properly cared for.

"We are closely coordinating with concerned agencies with the ongoing investigation. We thank the government and private entities and individuals who provided immediate assistance," it said.
