Senate honors former House Speaker Jose de Venecia
by Mary Antalan03 September 2024

The Senate of the Philippines paid tribute to former House Speaker Jose de Venecia, recognizing his significant contributions to the country and his lasting impact on the careers of several current senators.

For Senate President Francis "Chiz" G. Escudero, De Venecia is more than a political leader; he is a father figure who nurtured, guided, and mentored him, along with many of his colleagues, as they began their journeys as lawmakers.

Escudero highlighted that a substantial 33% of the current Senate members had grown and developed under De Venecia's leadership during his time as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Among those who served in the House during De Venecia's tenure are Senators Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri, Joel Villanueva, JV Ejercito, Imee Marcos, Risa Hontiveros, and Sonny Angara. These senators, according to Escudero, were shaped by De Venecia’s guidance and leadership.

"Nawa'y ito po ang magiging pinaka maliwanag, malakas, at maingay na testamento ng inyong tagumpay, hindi lamang bilang ama ng Kamara, pero bilang ama, tatay, tatay-tatayan, na tinitingala namin noong mga panahon na iyun," Escudero said in his heartfelt message before the Senate unanimously approved Senate Resolution No. 1142, which commends and honors the former Speaker.

Escudero also expressed his hope that the continued service of these senators will bring De Venecia the recognition he truly deserves—not just for his contributions to the country, but for the personal impact he has made on each and every Filipino.
