The European Parliament (EP) members will be in the country starting today, Wednesday, February 22 until Friday, Feb. 24, as part of the country's partnership with the lawmakers of the European Union to improve the rights situation and justice sector in the country.

In a statement on Monday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said six members of the EU Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (EP DROI) would head a delegation visiting Manila this week.

While in the country, European officials are expected to meet with their counterparts in Congress and pay courtesy calls on Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and Trade and Industry Secretary Alfredo Pascual.

“The visit of the EP DROI is taking place in the context of the open and regular engagement between the Philippines and the EU on human rights, and the shared aim to further constructive dialogue and cooperation on human rights, including in the framework of the EU GO-JUST Program which supports and complements national reforms in the justice sector,” the DFA said.

The DFA said the visit “signifies the expanding dialogue and cooperation” between the Philippines and the European Union.

The EU Parliament had been one of the institutions around the world that expressed utmost concern over the controversial and widespread killings brought about by the war on drugs campaign by former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
