The local government unit (LGU) of Makati on Wednesday, August 23, is scheduled to distribute school supplies to learners in the 14 schools in Embo barangays.
The distribution comes after the Department of Education (DepEd) approved the Makati LGU's request to distribute school supplies to 45,000 students in Embo schools affected by the territorial dispute between Makati and Taguig.
However, Makati Mayor Abigail 'Abby' Binay claimed there was a "last-minute attempt" to stop their distribution of school supplies.
In a Facebook post, she said the attempt occurred despite they secured a written authority from DepEd.
"Namigay nga kayo ng walang written authority, wala kayong narinig sa amin. Pinapasok kayo sa loob ng eskwelahan at namigay ng inyong mga gamit ng walang problema," she lamented.
"Ngayon may last minute attempt pa kayong ipatigil ang distribution. Akala ko ba kapakanan ng mga bata ang importante?" Binay added.
Earlier this month, the Taguig LGU began to take over the management of some public schools built by Makati City which caused parents questioned whether their children will continue to receive the same benefits, including free school uniforms and supplies.
But the DepEd then intervened in the row and announced that it will temporarily assume authority over the 14 schools in Makati City amidst the pending transition.
The 14 affected public schools in Embo barangays are as follows:
- Fort Bonifacio Elementary School
- Cembo Elementary School
- South Cembo Elementary School
- Pitogo Elementary School
- East Rembo Elementary School
- Rizal Elementary School
- Comembo Elementary School
- West Rembo Elementary School
- Pembo Elementary School
- Makati Science High School
- Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino High School
- Tibagan High School
- Fort Bonifacio High School
- Pitogo High School
