President Rodrigo Duterte on Christmas eve extended his yuletide greetings to Filipinos around the world, calling for "stronger faith and hope" as the country continues to suffer from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and Typhoon Odette.
"Let us also welcome this occasion with stronger faith and hope, especially as our nation continues to recover from the effects of Typhoon Odette and the COVID-19 pandemic," the president said in his message.
"May we all be united in spreading love, compassion, and happiness to our families and friends, and even those whom we need to reach out to."
Duterte also said that Christmas is a "time for peace" and called on Filipinos for unity in rebuilding efforts.
"There is a time and season for everything, and Christmas is a time for peace. Let us continue to help each other to heal and rebuild our lives."
In a video message released later, Duterte also said he hopes the season would help Filipinos "realize our dreams and aspirations" for the Philippines.
"We have been blessed much by the birth of Christ. Let us share this blessing with others. Maligayang Pasko sa ating lahat (Merry Christmas to all of us)," the president said.
The message came amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, where the country on Friday tallied 310 new infections. It also arrived as the death toll from Typhoon Odette increases to over 320 people, according to the latest government figures.
