The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has initiated a recall and replacement of a certain brand of canned tuna, which was included in family food packs (FFP) given to residents of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.
Several recipients have raised concerns regarding the safety of the product.
In a statement released on Saturday, the DSWD expressed disappointment that Ocean's Best Tuna, a component of the Family Food Packs, has generated multiple complaints from beneficiaries.
"It is unfortunate that Ocean’s Best Tuna, one of the items included in the DSWD’s Family Food Packs, has been the subject of numerous complaints from recipients/beneficiaries of the FFPs," the official statement read.
The department has confirmed that the canned tuna has not yet expired but will still ask the supplier to replace the items due to the complaints in the regions.
"It is important to note that the canned tuna are not expired as can be seen from the samples presented in social media," it added.
The DSWD is also investigating the possibility of imposing sanctions on the supplier, such as withholding of payment and blacklisting.
The distribution of family food packs is part of the government's assistance to residents affected by the oil spill in Mindoro.
