The number of leptospirosis cases soared in Metro Manila particularly, nearly double that of last year’s rate, reported the Department of Health (DOH).
From January 1st to November 9, the number has mounted to 2,980 cases, higher by 95.14 percent than the 1,481 cases recorded in 2023, according to the DOH - Metro Manila Center for Health Development.
The entire National Capital Region (NCR) has been placed under an epidemic threshold, entailing prompt response to avoid the disease’s further spread.
Quezon City logged the highest number of leptospirosis cases, at 701 infected. Many of them are men aged between 25 to 29 years old.
Overall, 225 have died of the disease, pegging the fatality rate at 7.79 percent.
The Health Department continues to discourage the public from wading or swimming in floodwaters or water which may have been contaminated by animal urine.
