Over 133 million kilos of waste were collected nationwide through the “Kalinga at Inisyatiba para sa Malinis na Bayan” or KALINISAN Program, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said in a press release on Monday.

In line with the vision for a clean, safe, and disaster-resilient nation of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the program would ensure proper waste disposal by segregating and recycling in order to prevent waste from clogging the waterways.

This project requires local governments and communities to conduct weekly clean-ups in every barangay, aiming to address solid waste management and boost flood prevention in the Philippines by clearing waterways, drainage systems, and public spaces of accumulated garbage.

According to the DILG, more than 22,000 barangays have been cleaned from around four million sites nationwide, from January 6, 2024, to May 3, 3025. The project had also engaged about 500,000 participants weekly.

DILG also stressed that the KALINISAN program is more than a clean-up drive as it is a disaster risk reduction, public health, and nation-building strategy.
