Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla said authorities are verifying reports that wanted businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang may currently be in Cambodia or Thailand, according to a report by RH Edniel Parrosa.
Speaking with the reporters, Remulla revealed that the investigation stems from information provided by the “star witness” in the missing sabungeros or cockfighters case, whistleblower Julie Patidongan.
According to the secretary, Ang is allegedly operating an online cockfighting business in Cambodia, coinciding with the recent exodus of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) to the Thailand-Cambodia border, which could mean he has reportedly established a ‘network’ there.
“According to the reports, mayroon na siyang operations ng online sabong doon based in Cambodia,” Remulla said.
“Baka nakaset-up siya ng network, kasi tumama lahat ng mga POGO lumipat sa Manila to Cambodia,” he added.
Remulla also acknowledged that the Bureau of Immigration (BI) cannot fully monitor the country’s massive coastline, raising the possibility that Ang may have left the country through “backdoor” channels.
This concern prompted authorities to apply for a Red Notice from Interpol.
Ang faces accusations of kidnapping and homicide involving over 100 cockfighters since 2021.
Despite his camp surrendering their firearms, Ang is still considered “armed and dangerous” due to his resources. The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) plans to declare a red alert once the gaming tycoon is arrested.
Meanwhile, BJMP spokesperson Superintendent Jayrex Bustinera told DZRH News that the Santa Cruz District Jail is prepared to receive Ang following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Santa Cruz, Laguna Regional Trial Court Branch 26.
