Following a mutiny by the Wagner mercenary group against the Russian government, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it is in constant communication with Filipinos in Russia.
According to DFA Assistant Secretary Paul Raymund Cortes, at least 11 Filipinos are currently in Rostov-on-Don, where the mercenary organization seized control of critical Russian military sites in an armed insurrection last weekend.
Cortes said that the Embassy is in close contact with 11 Filipinos via Zoom meetings.
He noted that they are in a good situation but urged them to remain vigilant.
Cortes also assured that if there are OFWs who need to return home, the Embassy is present to monitor their whereabouts and well-being.
According to a report, there have been no requests for repatriation from Filipinos in the area.
The DFA said that at least 10,000 Filipinos presently reside in Russia, with 8,000 residing in the Moscow area and 2,000 in the St. Petersburg area.
