MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has confirmed the death of the second Filipino who was earlier reported as “unaccounted” after the 7.7 earthquake that shook Myanmar last March 28, 2025.

In a statement, the DFA said that the Philippine Embassy in Yangon has informed the department on the positive identification of the second confirmed Filipino casualty of the Myanmar earthquake.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs is informed by the Philippine Embassy in Yangon of the positive identification of the remains of a second confirmed Filipino victim of the powerful 7.7 earthquake which hit Myanmar last March 28,” DFA said in a statement.

The DFA also mentioned that the family of the deceased has already been informed, and that the family has requested to respect their privacy in this very difficult time.

“Out of respect for the wishes of the family, the department is unable to provide any further details,” the DFA stated.

“We continue to hope for the best for the remaining two Filipinos still unaccounted for in Mandalay, Myanmar,” the DFA added.

The DFA confirmed the positive identification of the first Filipino casualty who died in the Myanmar earthquake on Wednesday.

The family of Filipino teacher Francis Aragon expressed deep sorrow and sadness through social media, saying that while they currently “mourn and grieve” for their deceased loved one, they are assured that “he is now in God’s grace.”

In his post on Facebook, Alvin Aragon informed the public that the authorities have already found the remains of his younger brother, whom he identified in the post.

“Ipinapaalam po [naming] na nakita na po [‘yong] kapatid namin at masakit man sa amin tanggapin [kasama na siya] ni Lord ngayon (We would like to inform that our brother has been found and while it hurts to accept, he is now with the Lord),” he wrote on Facebook.

Meanwhile, the DFA earlier confirmed that the Myanmar government is now in the stage of identifying the retrieved remains of victims buried in the rubble caused by the earthquake.

Over 3,500 people died, nearly 5,000 have been injured and over 200 remain missing in Myanmar, according to publicly available figures, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported.
