The Department of Education (DepEd) has taken control of 14 schools impacted by the territorial dispute between Makati and Taguig cities.
According to the directive issued by the department, the Office of the Secretary (OSec) will oversee the administration and operation of all 14 schools pending the implementation of a transition plan.
In response to the final and binding verdict of the Supreme Court, the Department recognizes the escalating tensions prevailing within the schools affected by the aforementioned judgment.
This has caused uncertainty regarding the smooth and peaceful reopening of the schools scheduled for August 29, 2023, DepEd added.
With the aim of safeguarding the best interests and well-being of students, teachers, and staff members, the Office of the Secretary will directly supervise the management and functioning of all 14 schools, pending the establishment of a transition plan, which takes effect immediately.
The 14 schools affected by the territorial dispute are as follows:
- Makati Science High School
- Comembo Elementary School
- Rizal Elementary School
- Pembo Elementary School
- Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino High School

Earlier, the local government of Taguig had urged the Makati City local government to refrain from impeding the transition process of the 10 barangays from Makati to Taguig by spreading false information and misleading narratives.
The Taguig local government began assuming control of certain public schools constructed by Makati City on Monday, August 14. Concerned parents have expressed apprehension about the well-being of their children amid this transition.
