Miss Charm Philippines 2025, Cyrille Payumo apologized after receiving criticism for wearing Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray’s farewell gown at a recent pageant event.
Last week, Cyrille sparked divided reactions among pageant fans after she was seen wearing Catriona’s iconic “Reflection” gown at the second edition of Miss Universe Philippines-Pampanga. Upon seeing her strut the pageant stage, people were quick to comment on the familiar designer piece.
Some people argued that the gown should be exclusive to Catriona alone, as it reflects her achievements as Miss Universe 2018. Meanwhile, other people came to Cyrille’s defense, stating that it was alright since the designer gave her the stamp of approval.
Catriona’s farewell gown was designed by Mak Tumang and is inspired by the Philippines’ national bird, the Philippine Eagle. Dubbed “Reflection,” the gown was inspired by the national bird’s point of view, mirroring its might and humility.
Amid the divided opinions circulating online, Cyrille issued a public apology on Tuesday, January 28, acknowledging people’s varying perspectives.
“On January 25, 2025, the second edition of Miss Universe Philippines-Pampanga took place, a momentous occasion that I will cherish forever. Days before the event, I was humbled to learn that the brilliant designer, Mak Tumang, would be sponsoring my final walk gown as I passed the crown to the next representative of our beloved province, Pampanga,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
Cyrille mentioned that a “wave of emotions” rushed down when she was informed that one of the options from Mak Tumang’s pieces would be Catriona’s farewell gown from Miss Universe 2018. Although Cyrille recalled feeling an “overwhelming sense of privilege” after taking her pick, she acknowledged why it sparked divided opinions amongst the public.
“To those who may have been hurt or offended, I want to clarify that causing pain was never my intention. My goal was to honor not only the victory of bringing the Miss Philippines Charm title home to Pampanga but also to celebrate the visionary artistry of Mak Tumang. I want to express my deep gratitude to Sir Mak for allowing me to wear one of his stunning masterpieces,” she said.
“I recognize that my actions may have unintentionally diminished the significance of Catriona Gray’s monumental achievements, and for that, I am deeply sorry. I take full responsibility for any misunderstandings or hurt feelings that may have resulted,” Cyrille added.
“This experience has been a moment of deep reflection, and I sincerely regret any distress caused. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow from it, and I appreciate your understanding during this time,” she continued.
