by Mary Antalan01 October 2024

Marikina 2nd District congressional candidate Jose Jaime Enaje is pushing for his Baybayin bill, advocating the removal of the English alphabet as a "required text" in schools.

According to Enaje, the use of the English alphabet should only be optional, with a stronger emphasis on Filipino in textbooks.

"Ang ifa-file an act removing English and alphabet as required in the DepEd and make it as optional and Bayabayin and Filipino at the same time na maituro at maging required para [at] magkaroon tayo ng National Script of the Philippines," said Enaje to reporters.

Enaje made this statement on the first day of the filing period for Certificates of Candidacy (COC) for the 2025 national and local elections, which started on October 1.
