The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has launched an investigation into three senators for allegedly receiving campaign donations from a government contractor during the 2022 elections. The probe also includes a local candidate from Bulacan province.
COMELEC Chairperson George Erwin Garcia confirmed the ongoing investigation but declined to reveal the identities of the lawmakers and the local candidate, citing the sensitivity of the case.
The inquiry comes amid growing concerns over alleged irregularities in government-funded flood control projects, some of which reportedly involve contractors with links to political campaign financing. One of these contractors is said to have also contributed to the recent campaign of Senate President Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero.
Garcia noted that the investigation, initiated by the commission itself, is expected to yield results within two to three weeks.
Meanwhile, Escudero has publicly dismissed the allegations as part of a political smear campaign, though COMELEC has neither confirmed nor denied whether he is among those under investigation.
The developments have raised new questions about transparency in campaign financing and the potential influence of government contractors on elected officials.
COMELEC reiterated its commitment to ensuring that campaign donations comply with existing election laws and to holding accountable those who may have violated them.
