Tears are about to stream down Coldplayers faces as the British rock band's frontman Chris Martin confirmed that they will be retiring after their 12th studio album.
The Moon Music interview with DJ Zane Lowe on Apple Music was released on Tuesday, October 1, with the whole band interviewed separately. They each realled their experiences and plans for the future. The band's frontman discussed the sense of mortality for every album they release.
Limits and Quality Control
“We're only gonna do 12 proper albums and that's real. Yes, I promise,” Chris said.
“Because less is more, and for some of our critics, even less is more,” he added.
The band's vocalist and pianist emphasized on the importance of having limitations with their time as musicians; citing beloved pieces of art from various artists.
"First of all, there's only eight Harry Potters, there's only 12 and a half Beatles albums, there's only about the same (amount) from Bob Marley,” he said.
“So all of our heroes, and also having that limit means that the quality control is so high right now. And for a song to make it, it's almost impossible, which is great,” he added.
What the Future Entails
While Chris recognizes the importance of their legacy's quality, he also acknowledges each member's life as their own. He wants the others to have some of their life for themselves, extending to other things.
“The joy of making something will always continue in some way, but there's something about the Coldplay thing. I don't know where the songs come from, I don’t know where the ideas come from. That's just coming to me for about four or five years now that you have to finish like this. And I trust that, just like I trust the song,” Chris remarked.
If the members do collaborate on something in the future, Chris said that it will be different. It may be a side thing or a compilation of things that they haven't finished yet.
But don't fret, Coldplay's 10th album, Moon Music, will be landing on Friday, October 4.
Chris recalled how lucky they had been to explore different countries and experience several cultures. He added that it gave them a sense of optimism from their fans who show up for their concerts because of the songs that "come from nowhere."
Coldplay is composed of frontman and pianist Chris Martin, guitarist Johnny Buckland, drummer Will Champion, and bassist Guy Berryman. They are most known for their hard-hitting, sentimental songs like "Fix You," "The Scientist," "Yellow," and "Sparks."
They made the much-awaited return to the Philippines in January as part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour, performing two-sold out concerts at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.
