QUEZON CITY – The White Room Gallery concludes its vibrant year with “Spirit of Thanksgiving,” a collaborative exhibition featuring works by its resident artists alongside emerging and esteemed guest artists.
Reflecting The White Room Gallery’s vision of integrating the arts with technology, the exhibit features a dynamic range of pieces, from traditional to contemporary art. With its uplifting theme, “Spirit of Thanksgiving” encapsulates the essence of a year well-lived and the promise of the year ahead, while exploring broader philosophical questions about the role of art in moments of crisis and celebration.
Innotech Center Director Leonor Magtolis-Briones expressed her gratitude for the public’s continued support of the gallery. “One and a half years ago, Innotech established The White Room Gallery as part of its advocacy that science, technology and the humanities cannot be separated one from the other. Today, we are launching our fifth exhibit in grateful thanksgiving for the initial successes of all our endeavors,” she shared in a message.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is Reymar Gacutan’s “The Victor,” a sculpture created using upcycled staple wires. “My piece intricately weaves together themes of struggle, survival, and triumph of a Filipino family. The interlacing of the wire symbolizes not only the interconnectedness but also the strength that is forged through diversity,” Gacutan explained.
While “Pasko Na” by Reuben Laurente showcases the deep-rooted love for faith and festivity inherent in the Filipino spirit. Inspired by a song, the artwork highlights the joyous celebration of Christmas through vibrant ‘parols’ set against the majestic backdrop of the famous Miagao Church.
“Time of Changes” by Hoche Briones also captured the interest of the guests. Inspired by fantasy stories, games and cinema, the piece comes from his imagined world of Orin which shows a time of upheaval and change from the year’s triumphs and disappointments.
Other featured artworks are by the Innotech resident artists, including Ramon Acevedo, Karen Fabie-Concepcion, Joy Dasco, Jes Evangelista, Byron Valenzuela, and Jefferson Villacruz. Invited guest artists include the Father of the Philippine Art Workshop Fernando Sena, Actors Krishna Villanueva and Jao Mapa, as well as Rita Badilla-Gudiño, Ferdinand Doctolero, Ulysses Imbang, Melanie Libatique, Eden Ocampo, Eligio Rosario, Roland Rosacay, Raul Roco Jr., and Ria Willie.
Looking ahead, the gallery’s new curator, Jay Ticar, shared an exciting vision for 2025: “Next year, The White Room Gallery will concentrate on an exciting research-oriented trajectory aligned with Innotech’s focus on education. Projects will involve collaborations between practicing experts in science and the arts, addressing themes particularly architectural, environmental, indigenous and those that respond to poverty and disaster.”
“Spirit of Thanksgiving” will be on display until January 17, 2025, and is open for public viewing from Tuesday to Friday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. For more information or to arrange special viewings outside regular hours, follow The White Room Gallery on social media or email at [email protected].
