Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte criticized and cursed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the arrest of his father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, calling it illegal and vowed to fight back.

"It seems to me, the stories that I’ve heard about Martial Law and oppression is synonymous with the Marcos family name," Duterte said in his speech during the 88th Araw ng Dabaw celebration.

The son of the former president subsequently blasted Marcos, asserting that he will "never be loved," particularly by those who call on his father’s name, and reiterated their promise to stand firm and fight back.

Upon his arrival in Manila from Hong Kong on March 11, the 79-year-old Duterte was arrested by authorities under an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and was later transferred to The Hague in the Netherlands.

He is facing charges of crimes against humanity, which are alleged to have been committed in the Philippines between November 1, 2011, and March 16, 2019.

"Aside from you not being loved by the people, all you have is the government’s resources and your term. Beyond that, you are nothing," the young Duterte firmly addressed Marcos.

He went on to say that he "prays" Marcos will complete his term as president, while emphasizing their commitment to not back down following the arrest.

Mayor Duterte further expressed his anger, pointing out that his father allowed the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in 2016, despite public outcry, particularly from those who battled the Marcos dictatorship.

Previously, the Davao City Mayor claimed that the current administration is "fantasizing" that the arrest of the former President would "materialize" and that the issue surrounding the national budget would simply disappear, describing it as an act of desperation.

President Marcos Jr., however, reiterated that the arrest was conducted in full compliance with all required procedures, rejecting any claims of it being unlawful.

Former President Duterte is currently in the custody of the ICC and being held at the Scheveningen detention center.

On Friday, he appeared in his first ICC hearing via video link, where he was informed of the crimes he is alleged to have committed and his rights as a defendant.

The confirmation hearing for his charges will take place on September 23, 2025.
