As Mt. Mayon continues to show signs of unease, further evacuations considered

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) could recommend the evacuation of residents staying within the seven to eight-kilometer extended danger zone around Mayon Volcano.

Dr. Paul Alanis, PHIVOLCS resident volcanologist of the Mayon Volcano Observatory, advised residents of Legazpi City, as well as in barangays Daraga, and Sto. Domingo should prepare to evacuate if the pyroclastic density current reaches six kilometers.

"Sa ngayon kasi nasa Alert Level 3 tayo, ang recommendation natin ay yung mag-evacuate yung nasa loob ng six-kilometer permanent danger zone," Alanis said on Tuesday, July 4, during DZRH's Magandang Umaga Pilipinas.

"Kahit nasa Alert Level 3, kapag umabot sa six-kilometer pyroclastic density current, maari natin i-recommend na kahit yung nasa seven to eight kilometer (danger zone) ay mag-evacuate na rin," he added.

Alanis said that the current pyroclastic density current events in Mayon Volcano only reach up to four kilometers.

PHIVOLCS raised Alert Level 3 in Mayon Volcano on June 8 after the agency monitored an increase in volcanic activities, and recommended the evacuation of residents within the six-kilometer permanent danger zone.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Tuesday that the unease in Mayon Volcano affected around 9.776 families or around 37,994 individuals.
