The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday said it is not yet seeing the need to expand the current number coding scheme in Metro Manila despite heavier traffic observed by motorists.
According to MMDA general manager Romando Artes, EDSA has been seeing slower traffic since Metro Manila was eased to a less stringent Alert Level 2.
"Medyo may pagbibigat na po. Nagkakaroon na po tayo ng moderate to slow moving lalong-lalo na po kapag rush hour," he told DZRH on Tuesday.
(We are observing slight heaviness. We can now see moderate to slow-moving especially during rush hour.)
Artes said that the MMDA is reviewing every day if there is a need to expand the number coding scheme in Metro Manila, which is currently implemented weekdays from 5PM to 8PM.
"Pero sa ngayon po hindi pa po namin din nakikita 'yung pangangailangan na i-expand ito dahil po ang traffic naman po ay nangyayari pa lang … sobrang bigat between 5 to 8 pm ng gabi," he said.
(But for now, we don’t see the need to expand it because the traffic only becomes extremely heavy between 5 to 8pm every night.)
"So mananatili po 'yan pansamantala sa ngayon … at hindi muna natin palalawakin. Lalong-lalo na sa ngayon na hindi pa naman po normal ang pampublikong transportasyon natin," he added.
(So it will temporarily stay and will not be expanded. Especially now when our public transportation has yet to return to normal.)
To alleviate the slower movement of traffic in EDSA, the MMDA official said they are currently clearing the Mabuhay Lanes to provide alternative routes to commuters.
