Vice presidential candidate and Senator Francis ‘Kiko’ Pangilinan showed concern over the appointment of George Garcia, former lawyer of presidential candidate Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr., as the new Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner, saying it is a serious concern.
Garcia was Marcos' lawyer during his electoral protest against Vice President Leni Robredo in 2016.
According to Pangilinan, the impartiality of Garcia as a commissioner of the poll body is questionable.
Robredo has yet to comment on the said appointment by President Rodrigo Duterte.
Aside from Marcos, Garcia also served as a lawyer for different political personalities like Senator Grace Poe, Senator Koko Pimentel, and other personalities.
On Tuesday, acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar also announced the appointment of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Undersecretary Aimee Neri as a new commissioner and National Commission on Muslim Filipino Chief Saidamen Pangarungan as the new Comelec chairman.
