The University of the Philippines (UP) has named private lawyer and former regent Angelo Jimenez as its 22nd state university president.

In a statement on Friday, UP announced that its Board of Regents comprise of Catanduanes State University president Patrick Azanza, 1-Ang Edukasyon Party-list representative Salvador Belaro, UP Diliman chancellor Fidel Nemenzo, UP Institute of Civil Engineering founding director Benito Pacheco, and former UP Los Baños (UPLB) Chancellor Fernando Sanchez, have unanimously favored Jimenez over five other nominees.

He will be succeeding outgoing UP president Danilo Concepcion whose term will end in February 2023.

Jimenez will have a six-year term from February 2023 to February 2029.

In a Facebook post, Jimenez expressed his gratitude to the BOR.

"From my time as a student until I earned my degrees from the University of the Philippines, I have sought to serve an institution that is not just a microcosm of Philippine society, but a symbol of the enduring promise and boundless potential of our nation," he wrote.

"I realized that I am the first Student Regent to be given the honor of serving as the University's President. I hope to uphold the virtues we hold dear—honor and excellence, giting at tapang—and, more importantly, apply these to the benefit of the Filipino people and the world," he added.

Prior to his appointment, Jimenez served as a BOR member in 1992 and 2016 to 2021.

In his career, he received numerous awards including the Outstanding Butuanon Award for Professional Excellence.
