Alex Eala bowed out early of the WTA1000 Qatar Open after suffering a first-round loss to familiar foe Tereza Valentova on Saturday at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha.

The world No. 40 Filipina fell to the 18-year-old Czech, 7-6(6), 6-1, as Valentova marked a winning debut at the WTA 1000 level to advance to the second round.

Valentova showed composure in the opening set, rallying from deficits before edging Eala in a tense tiebreak, then took control in the second set to seal the victory.

With the win, Valentova moved on to face fellow Czech Karolina Muchova in the next round of the tournament, which runs from February 8 to 14.

The loss marked Eala’s second defeat to Valentova in the past four months. The Czech teenager also knocked out the Filipina rising star at the Japan Open last October, handing her a 6-1, 6-2 loss in the round of 32.

Despite the early exit in Doha, Eala is expected to regroup quickly as she continues her Middle Eastern swing on the WTA Tour.

She will have a few days to rest before competing at the Dubai Tennis Championships in the United Arab Emirates, scheduled from February 15 to 21.
