UPDATED | Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala continues her Middle East swing with her debut at the WTA1000 Qatar Open, set from February 8 to 14 at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
Eala, 20, arrives in Qatar fresh off a strong showing at the Abu Dhabi Open. In doubles, she and her Indonesian partner Janice Tjen—affectionately dubbed the “SEAsters” for their Southeast Asian alliance—battled their way to the semifinals before falling 4-6, 2-6 to Tereza Mihalikova and Olivia Nicholls on February 6.
On the singles front, the Filipino star also made a deep run, reaching the quarterfinals before being stopped by Ekaterina Alexandrova, 6-3, 6-3, showcasing her growing consistency and competitive edge on the WTA tour.
Now World No. 40, Eala turns her focus to singles competition, opening the Qatar Open campaign with a rematch against her former nemesis, Czech world No. 44 Tereza Valentova.
Their last encounter came in October 2025 at the Japan Women’s Open in Osaka, where Eala suffered a frustrating 6-1, 6-1 loss in the Round of 32.
The Round of 64 clash is scheduled for Monday, February 9, at 8 PM (Manila time), marking a highly anticipated showdown as Eala looks to advance deeper into the tournament and gain momentum in the WTA1000 series.
