The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) sought assistance from the Metro Manila Council for a campaign against fake news and the "malign influences" of China regarding the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
China's efforts to spread fake news and misinformation related to the WPS have become a growing concern for the Philippines and its allies. These actions are part of a broader strategy by China to assert its territorial claims in the South China Sea, including areas within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
According to a report by Edniel Parrosa on Friday, the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations (J7) of the AFP has called for intensified military operations and recruitment of military reservists in response to alleged foreign interference activities, extending even to the barangay level.
In response, MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando Artes said they will request a copy of a new map from the AFP to post in their office and distribute to local government units (LGUs) in Manila, as well as to support the recruitment process.
"Siguro hihingi kami ng bagong mapa para mapaskil sa mga strategic na lugar dito sa MMDA. Napag-usapan din kanina na iikot din 'yung information campaign pati 'yung recruitment ng reservists sa lahat ng LGUs dito sa Metro Manila," said Artes.
The recruitment process will be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the Regional Peace and Order Council.
