ABAP aims for gold in Tokyo Olympics
by Kristan Carag09 April 2021

Even amidst the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the Association of the Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP) remains determined to bring home the first Olympic gold medal of the country later this year. " We cannot lower our projections. We will aim for the top plum," ABAP secretary general Ed Picson said on Tuesday, April 6, during the virtual forum of the Philippine Sportswriters Association. So far, four Filipino boxers; Irish Magno, Eumir Marcial, Nesthy Petecio, and Carlo Paalam, have secured spots for the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Picson assured that coaches, nutritionists, and psychologists of ABAP closely monitors the status of the four boxers to ensure that they are prepared for the Olympics. ' Everybody is pooling together to give our boxers the best opportunities to be at their best, to be at their optimal condition when they get to the Olympics. That is the focus," the ABAP official said. " We are aiming for the gold, and they have to be at their best to be able to get that opportunity. Iyon ang parati natin dinidikdik sa coaching staff. Iyon naman ang parating dinidikdik ng coaching staff sa ating mga boxer," he added. Picson stressed that ABAP cannot be complacent especially since the Philippines has four chances to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing. " We have to take advantage of the fact that we have four chances at the gold. Iyan apat na iyan, pwedeng-pwede iyan. Wala kang itatapon diyan. Al we need to do is make sure that they are at the best when Tokyo comes around," Gymnast Carlos Yulo, and pole vaulter EJ Obiena have also qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, which will open on July 23 and run until August 8.
