Department of Education (DepEd) Sec. Sonny Angara said that 98 percent of schools in the Philippines started classes on Monday, July 29.
Based on the data of DepEd as of Sunday, July 28, only 842 schools postponed their opening of classes due to the impact of the Tropical Depression Butchoy, Super Typhoon Carina, and the southwest monsoon.
The number include 452 schools in Central Luzon, 225 in Metro Manila, 95 in the Ilocos Region, 66 in CALABARZON, and four in Soccsksargen.
Angara said that the figure only corresponds to two percent of schools in the Philippines.
"Maliit lang kasi iyon ay wala pa na two percent of the whole country. Ibig sabihin yung 98 percent of schools nagbukas," Angara told reporters in an ambush interview at the Carmona National Highschool in Cavite.
The DepEd chief also confirmed that the schools, which will open classes in a later date, will have to hold make-up classes on Saturdays.
"Usually, ganoon naman iyon, kapag na-miss yung weekday sa weekend may make-up (classes)," Angara remarked.
