The Department of Health (DOH) has logged 48 new cases of road accidents, bringing the total to 577 cases for the holiday season.
According to the Department’s data since December 22, 2024, 108 of these accidents have been linked to alcohol consumption, and in 500 cases, those involved did not use safety accessories like helmets. Motorcycle accidents account for more than 70 percent of the total, at 415 out of the 577 cases.
In a repeated advisory, DOH cautioned the public against driving after drinking alcohol, if tired, or lacking sleep. If on a motorcycle, the driver must be wearing a helmet, and if in a car, seatbelts must be worn. Drivers should also observe road signs and speed limits.
“Karamihan ng mga nai-injure sa road, two-wheeler. Hindi magkasama talaga (ang pag-inom at pag-drive). Talagang huwag kayong iinom at sasakay ng motorsiklo niyo,” Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa urged previously. “Ito ‘yung number one case namin: road crashes.”
(Most of those injured on the road are on two-wheelers. Drinking and driving really do not go together. Do not drink and drive your motorcycle. This is our number one case: road crashes.)
He had advised that holiday partygoers tap a designated driver, or someone assigned to drive guests home and refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages.
