More than 107,000 customers have been affected by power interruptions from the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) due to continuous rainfall and flooding in parts of Luzon.

In a statement, Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga said that 90% of the affected areas experienced outages due to flooding. These include most areas in Metro Manila, as well as parts of Cavite, Rizal, Bulacan, Laguna, Batangas, and Quezon

While some areas remain free of flooding, residents have still reported power interruptions. According to the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), this is because some of the power lines in these areas are connected to circuits that serve flooded communities.

Zaldarriaga emphasized that safety remains the top priority before power restoration efforts are made.

“The primary consideration before we restore power is yung ikabubuti ng lahat ng kababayan natin whether flooded or not, ang kailangan natin unang-una is to ensure the safety of everyone. Humihingi ako ng pang-unawa,” he added.

Earlier today, the Department of Energy (DOE) inspected the situation and has directed Meralco to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

When asked for a timeline for full power restoration, Zaldarriaga said he prefers not to give a specific timeframe until weather patterns are more clearly understood.

He also appealed to the public for patience and understanding, noting that Meralco also has to ensure the safety of their personnel as they conduct restoration operations.

“Safety first before we do anything in terms of the restoration efforts," Zaldarriaga stressed.
