'They have a lot of explaining to do' Abalos says on cops involved in arrest of rogue colleague

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Sec. Benhur Abalos seeks an explanation from several police officers regarding the 'inconsistencies' in the arrest of dismissed PMSgt. Rodolfo Mayo Jr.

Abalos earlier raised his suspicion of an attempt to 'cover up' the arrest of Mayo, a former member of the Philippine National Police Drug Enforcement Group Special Operations Unit in the National Capital Region,

The allegations of Abalos stemmed from closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the buy-bust operation Quezon City on October 8 that led to the seizure of 990 kilograms of shabu, also known as crystallized methamphetamine, and to the arrest of Mayo.

Abalos explained that the CCTV footage showed that authorities had already taken Mayo in custody during the afternoon of October 8, which contradicts the information that the arrest happened between 11 PM and midnight.

"They have a lot of explaining to do here," Abalos said during DZRH's Damdaming Bayan.

Abalos has ordered 10 police officers, including two police generals, seen in the CCTV footage to take a voluntary leave of absence amidst the investigation.

He threatened to suspend the police officers if they refused to take a leave of absence.

PNP formed Special Investigation Task Force 990 after 42 kilograms of shabu went missing from the 990 kilograms of narcotics confiscated during the operation last October 8.

Authorities recovered the missing drugs on October 15 at an abandoned car in San Juan City.
