A worker stranded on a barge washed off by the forceful currents of an overflowing Marikina river was brought to safety past midnight on Thursday, July 25.
The man, one of many employed to dredge the river, was trapped on a barge that had collided with the F. Manalo Bridge and, subsequently, the Manggahan Floodgate on Wednesday, July 24. His companions onboard and colleagues on other vessels had already been rescued by personnel from Barangay Manggahan and Pasig's Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
Edniel Parrosa reported that Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto himself personally supervised the rescue mission for this last man. He was saved at last at 12:46 AM on Thursday with the help of the Quezon City BFP, said the Pasig City Public Information Office (PIO).
Other workers in barracks who were interviewed said that when the river rose, a number of their colleagues were unable to come down from of the barges.
The F. Manalo Bridge has been closed and subject to inspection, and the Manggahan Floodgate is undergoing similar assessments.
