The World Health Organization (WHO) voiced its regret on Tuesday after the United States announced its intention to withdraw from the organization.
In a statement, the WHO emphasized that the organization plays a vital role in safeguarding the health and security of people worldwide by tackling the root causes of diseases, strengthening health systems, and detecting, preventing, and responding to health emergencies.
"WHO plays a crucial role in protecting the health and security of the world’s people, including Americans, by addressing the root causes of disease, building stronger health systems, and detecting, preventing and responding to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, often in dangerous places where others cannot go," WHO said.
The WHO further pointed out that the U.S., a founding member since 1948, has been integral in shaping and guiding the organization's work in collaboration with 193 other Member States, particularly through its participation in the World Health Assembly and Executive Board.
Over more than seven decades of cooperation, the WHO and the U.S. have reportedly saved numerous lives, protecting both Americans and people worldwide from health risks.
"Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have contributed to and benefited from membership in WHO," it added.
Moreover, the WHO emphasized that, with the support of the U.S. and other Member States, it has carried out the most extensive reforms in its history over the past seven years to improve accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries.
In closing, the WHO expressed hope that the U.S. will reassess its decision and is eager to engage in constructive discussions to maintain the partnership between the U.S. and WHO for the health and well-being of millions globally.
"We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe," WHO said.
The statement was made following U.S. President Donald Trump's signing of an executive order to withdraw from the WHO, citing allegations that the organization mishandled the COVID-19 pandemic and other health crises.
