Legislators protested against Vice President Sara Duterte’s plan to have Davao 1st District Rep. Paolo Duterte pursue either the House Speaker or House Minority Leader position, calling it out as a tactic to seize the reins on the lower chamber of Congress.
In a report by RH 12 Milky Rigonan, House Deputy Minority Leader France Castro and Representative-elect Antonio Tiñio of the Teachers Party-list said that the House of Representatives is not a family-run corporation which would allow Duterte to simply designate her brother in said seats when the 20th Congress convenes in July.
This attempt at monopolizing government seats, Tiñio argued, is proof that the Duterte family is determined to assert control and maintain power.
He said that the Vice President and Davao representative should acknowledge that their power comes from the people, and is not a right vested by their family.
