Vice President Sara Duterte revealed on Tuesday that some members of the House of Representatives are allegedly planning to file an impeachment complaint against her.
"Pinag-uusapan nila kahit na i-deny nila. Pinaguusapan ng members ng House of Representatives. Kasi meron pa naman kaming mga kaibigan diyan sa loob eh na hindi lang nagsasalita dahil takot daw sila. So sinasabi nila it's openly discussed ‘yung impeachment," Duterte told reporters after the Senate Committee on Finance endorsed the Office of the Vice President's proposed P2.037-billion budget for 2025 to the plenary.
(They talk about it even if they deny it. This is being discussed by members of the House of Representatives. We still have friends there who don’t speak out because they are afraid, but they say the impeachment is openly discussed)
Duterte said she is aware of these discussions and is waiting to see the next move from the House, which she believes is aimed at portraying her family as corrupt, criminal, and self-serving.
She further claimed that her family poses a threat to certain individuals who are interested in consolidating power, either by becoming prime minister through a possible Charter change (Cha-cha) or by securing the presidency if the Cha-cha efforts fail.
"Sinabi ko na dati, we are a threat to the perpetuation in power of people na interesado maging, sabihin na nating, prime minister kung matuloy ‘yung niluluto nilang Cha-cha o president kung hindi maluto ‘yung Cha-cha nila," she added.
(I've said before that we are a threat to the continuation in power of those who are interested in becoming, let's say, prime minister if their Cha-cha (Charter change) plans succeed, or president if their Cha-cha fails.)
"Kung paalisin nila ako dito kung impeach nila ako, hindi kawalan sa akin ang posisyon ng Vice President. In the first place hindi ko gustong tumakbong Presidente , hindi ko gustong tumakbong Vice President."
(If they remove me from this position, if they impeach me, the position of Vice President is no loss to me. In the first place, I never wanted to run for President, and I never wanted to run for Vice President.)
Despite the rumors, Duterte made it clear that she is not troubled by the impeachment talks. She reiterated that she did not initially plan to run for the vice presidency and does not regret her decision.
In November 2023, House Deputy Majority Leader and ACT-CIS party-list representative Erwin Tulfo denied that House members were discussing filing an impeachment complaint against Duterte.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. also stated that she does not deserve to be impeached, despite the circulating rumors within the House.
