The Luzon and Visayas grids will be placed under yellow and red alert on Thursday, May 23, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
In its latest advisory, the NGCP said the red alert in the Luzon grid will take effect from 1:00 PM–5:00 PM and 6:00 PM–10:00 PM.
A yellow alert will take effect from 12:00 PM–1:00 PM, 5:00 PM–6:00 PM, and 10:00 PM–12:00 AM on May 24.
Luzon grid's available capacity is 13,531 megawatts, but its peak demand is 13,597 megawatts.
"3 plants have been on forced outages since 2023, 4 between January and March 2024, and 11 power plants between April and May 2024, while 3 are running on degraded capacities, for a total of 2,525.5 MW unavailable to the grid," the NGCP said.
Meanwhile, the Visayas grid will be under red alert from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
A yellow alert will occur at 12:00 PM–2:00 PM, 4:00 PM–6:00 PM, and 7:00 PM–10:00 PM.
Visayas grid's available capacity is at 2,588 megawatts while its peak demand is 2,537 megawatts.
"1 plant has been on forced outage since 2022, 2 since 2023, 2 between January and March 2024, and 16 power plants between April and May 2024; while 3 are running on derated capacities, for a total of 553.1 MW unavailable to the grid," said the NGCP.
A red alert status is issued when the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulatory requirements.
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
