A damaged vessel caught fire at the vicinity shoreline of Brgy. Punta Engaño, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu province, on Friday afternoon, April 28.
According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), initial investigation showed that a fire broke out inside the MV Diamond Highway during the dismantling operations conducted by 23 individuals.
The said vessel had been on the shoreline of Brgy. Punta since it ran aground during the onslaught of Super Typhoon Odette back in 2021.
PCG said its Sub-Station Lapu-Lapu and Marine Environmental Protection Unit (MEPU)-Central Visayas had assisted the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Lapu-Lapu City during the firefighting operations.
Interviewed during DZRH Balansyado, Senior Fire Officer (SFO) Baguio said the fire reached the third alarm but no individuals were reportedly hurt.
Senior Fire Officer Baguio: Itong barko ay ship wreck at plano nila itong gibain dahil na-distress ito noong Bagyong Odette. Base sa nakalap namin, gigibain gamit na cutting torch.#Balansyado
