The Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) on Friday expressed support for Rhian Ramos’ driver, known as “Totoy,” following his sworn statement regarding an alleged beating incident involving the actress, Michelle Dee, and beauty queen Samantha Panlilio.
In an exclusive interview on Damdaming Bayan, VACC President Arsenio “Boy” Evangelista said the organization found "reasonable probable cause" in Totoy’s allegations, prompting them to endorse the case to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
“Naniniwala kami sa sinumpaang salaysay niya, detalyado at ang ifa-file na case na una ay serious illegal detention, torture, violation ng Anti-torture law,” Evangelista said.
Evangelista likened the situation to a David-versus-Goliath scenario, with an ordinary driver standing up to influential figures.
"Basta ang VACC ay tutulong dito dahil isa lamang siyang simpleng tao o ordinaryong tao, driver, umbrella boy, utusan again sa mga malalaking personalities, celebrities," he emphasized.
According to Evangelista, Totoy reportedly endured harassment and physical abuse, including being stepped on with combat boots.
The incident allegedly involved two ununiformed bodyguards and two Makati police officers, who reportedly pressured Totoy to admit the contents of the missing “film,” which was accidentally placed in the envelope by Ramos.
Totoy claimed he did not intentionally bring an ampao or envelope containing sensitive photos to Samar, believing it to be a holiday money gift.
“Parang accidentality ang naibigay hindi yata angpao na cash, kundi yung film,” he explained.
Totoy said the envelope’s contents were eventually returned, but some items were missing, prompting the pursuit by Ramos’ group.
Evangelista described the consequences of Totoy’s alleged ordeal, saying the intense psychological and physical torture left him in a state of confusion, leading him to jump from the 39th floor of a building.
VACC also confirmed that Totoy tested negative in drug tests and had no prior criminal record in both Police Clearance and NBI records.
According to Evangelista, the conflict arose over the envelope’s contents, which Totoy’s wife reportedly saw and deemed inappropriate, causing the subsequent beating.
“Nakita raw ng asawa na medyo malaswa ganyan…so, may nawawala by accident nabuksan yata nakita,” he said.
The NBI is expected to file charges against the actress, beauty queen, bodyguards, and police personnel, with VACC assisting in the case.
