In celebration of Filipino American History Month (FAHM) this October, U.S. President Joe Biden extended his warm greetings and appreciation to the Filipino American community, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the United States.

In a letter released by the White House, President Biden highlighted the deep historical ties between America and its immigrant communities, particularly praising Filipinos and Filipino Americans for enriching the nation's culture and embodying the values of service, leadership, and innovation.

"America is the only country in the world with a heart and soul that draw from old and new. For hundreds of years, people from around the globe have made the courageous trek to our Nation’s shores. And since our founding, Filipinos and Filipino Americans have enriched the very essence of who we are as a people," Biden stated.

He acknowledged the roles of Filipinos and Filipino Americans as community leaders, first responders, service members, and professionals across various fields, including arts, business, engineering, public service, and healthcare. Biden praised their commitment to the nation and underscored their representation of America's best qualities.

"By honoring and reflecting on the proud history and heritage of this vibrant community, we all come closer to realizing the full promise of America for all Americans," the President said.

In his message, Biden also expressed hope that Filipino Americans continue to take pride not only in their individual accomplishments but also in the collective achievements of their community. He emphasized the importance of dreamers and doers in shaping the nation’s future.

FAHM was first celebrated in October 1992, after being proposed by the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS).

The choice of October is significant because it marks the anniversary of the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental U.S., which dates back to October 18, 1587, when Filipino sailors arrived in Morro Bay, California.

In 2009, the U.S. Congress officially recognized October as Filipino American History Month, solidifying its importance and increasing nationwide awareness of the Filipino American community's legacy.
