UP Broadcasting Association issues statement on AI-generated sportscasters
by Ada Pelonia27 September 2023

The University of the Philippines (UP) Broadcasting Association released a statement on Sunday, Sept. 24, on GMA Network’s launch of the country’s first artificial intelligence (AI) sportscasters.

“The UP Broadcasting Association firmly believes that this move does very little to serve the people as it only sets an alarming precedent that would profoundly impact the future of broadcasting and those who aspire to be in this industry,” the statement read.

“[GMA Integrated News’s] adoption of AI technology also demonstrates our commitment to innovation in journalism. We embrace emerging technologies to stay at the forefront of the media industry by providing our audience with a modern and engaging sports news experience,” Senior Vice President and Head of Integrated News, Regional TV, and Synergy Oliver Victor B. Amoroso said in a statement.

GMA Integrated News on Friday, Sept. 23, introduced the newest AI sportscasters, Maia and Marco, to feature updates for teams competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 99.

UP Broadcasting Association expressed their concerns over the matter, saying that while adapting to emerging technologies surrounding broadcasting is inevitable, it is crucial not to forget that such technologies are “mere tools to assist us and improve our work.”

“They should not, in any way, replace and displace the people who have spent years in the study and practice of broadcasting,” UP’s statement further read.

The AI-generated sportscasters have drawn flak from netizens since its release.
