United Nations Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Opinion and Expression Irene Khan recommended the abolition of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).
In a press conference on Friday, Khan urged President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. to take action on the country's anti-insurgency task force following the reopening of talks with communist guerillas. She also called on the government to adopt a law that protects human rights defenders from red-tagging.
In addition, Khan also recommended that the Commission on Human Rights define red-tagging and terror-tagging and propose legislation against it.
Former officials of NTF-ELCAC have been notorious for red-tagging human rights defenders, activists, and critics of the Duterte administration.
The press conference marked the end of Khan's visit to the Philippines, where she visited various government agencies and met with government officials. She also visited civic society organizations and certain personalities.
