Banana-made desserts supremacy!
Two popular Pinoy meriendas, Turon and Maruya, have made it to TasteAtlas's Top 50 'Best Deep-Fried Desserts in the World'.
The experiential food guide listed Turon, scoring 4.10, in 21st place as a lumpia snack filled with saba plantains and jackfruit.
"Falling in the group of popular lumpia snacks, Turon is the famous Filipino treat made with saba plantains and jackfruit. The fruit is sliced lengthwise, dusted in brown sugar, enclosed in thin wheat wrappers, then fried until golden and crispy," TasteAtlas wrote.
It was developed from Chinese spring rolls and named one of its sweetest versions.
Turon is commonly served with caramel and sprinkled with roasted sesame seeds.
Maruya, on the other hand, scoring 3.90, landed at the 36th spot and took note as a dessert consisting of sliced or smashed bananas dusted with flour, battered and fried until crispy.
"The fritters are usually made with Filipino saba bananas and can come in various forms which are often served lightly dusted with sugar," it read.
This is commonly eaten as a light snack, breakfast, and afternoon dessert.
Another banana dish from Indonesia, Pisang Goreng, has topped the list, receiving 4.60 points.
Among the top ten in the list are Germany’s quarkbällchen, Argentina’s pastelitos criollos, Greece’s fouskakia, Austria’s krapfen, Peru’s picarones, Italy’s bomboloni, portugal’s bola de berlim, Spain’s churros, and Czech Republic’s vdolky.
