The long-awaited debut of Alas Pilipinas Men in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship ended in heartbreak on Friday night as World No. 43 Tunisia swept the hosts, 25-13, 25-17, 25-23, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Philippines, ranked 82nd in the world, tried to rally behind skipper Bryan Bagunas, who returned to international action with a 23-point performance after nearly a year away from competition.
Tunisia wasted no time establishing dominance in the opening frame, punishing the host team with a 12-1 run that silenced the early cheers from the home crowd.
The second set saw glimpses of resistance from Alas Pilipinas, narrowing the gap to 14-19 behind Jade Disquitado’s timely kill, but errors at the net and from the service line doomed their momentum.
The third set turned into the most competitive stretch of the night. Backed by roaring fans, the Filipinos kept pace and even threatened to extend the game.
Bagunas drilled attack after attack, while Marck Espejo added scoring support. However, Tunisia’s disciplined blocking and composure in the closing rallies sealed the straight-sets finish.
Alas Pilipinas now faces an even tougher climb in Pool A as they battle reigning African champion and world No. 23 Egypt on Tuesday, September 16, before wrapping up their group campaign against powerhouse Iran, ranked No. 13, on September 18.
