The low pressure area that entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) developed into tropical depression Nika and is moving westward, PAGASA reported on Saturday morning.
In its 11:00 AM weather bulletin, the weather bureau reported that Tropical Depression Nika is located 1,145 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon. It has maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center, with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h, and is moving westward at 30 km/h.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is raised over Catanduanes, indicating a minimal to minor threat to life and property due to the expected winds.
"The highest Wind Signal which may be hoisted during the occurrence of NIKA is Wind Signal No. 3," PAGASA said in their bulletin.
Nika is expected to move generally west-northwestward over the course of the forecast period.
According to the track forecast, it may make landfall in Isabela or Aurora by Monday, November 11.
Moreover, Nika is projected to steadily gain strength and could be classified as a severe tropical storm by Monday.
A new tropical cyclone bulletin is set to be issued at 5:00 PM today.
