The “Dungaw,” or La Mirata, was carried out successfully for the 2025 Traslación.
Considered one of the highlights and most anticipated event during the yearly procession of the image of the Jesus Nazarene, the ceremony began just before 6 PM at the San Sebastian Basilica, Plaza del Carmen in Quiapo.
The image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was made to sway on a balcony overlooking the image of Jesus Nazarene amid shouts of “Viva Nazareno!”
This tradition, passed down by Spanish conquistadors, prompts prayer and reflection as devotees trek the path to eventual union with Mary and Jesus the Nazarene, and demonstrates maternal love.
The ceremonial meeting ceased in the 1900’s, but was brought back in 2014.
Earlier, RH 15 Jecelle Ricafort reported that several devotees fainted and were rushed to first aid stations during the “Dungaw” mass.
In another report by DZRH TV's Rose Babiera, a commotion broke out by the church gates. Participants surged past church guards, some meaning to bring their companions experiencing difficulty breathing to the medics inside.
The procession of the Jesus Nazarene started at 4:41 am on Thursday from the Quirino Grandstand and is now making its way back to the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno - Quiapo Church.
