The week-long transportation strike of some groups to opposed the national govenrment's move to phaseout traditional jeepneys and UV express commenced on Monday, affecting commuters in several parts of the Metro.
Last week, several transport groups announced their participation in the nationwide strike that will be from March 6-12 regardless of the extension in the franchise consolidation as announced by the Land Transportation Franchising Board (LTRB).
In a report from RH Boy Gonzales, commuters were seen hiring tricycles to transport them to Blumentritt in Manila earlier this morning.
Groups, including several jeepney drivers, were also seen protesting in Monumento, Caloocan City on the first day of the transportation strike.
Following the strike, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) prepared 25 transport vehicles that will offer libreng sakay for commuters affected by the week-long strike.
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO), meanwhile, said 11 jeepney and UV Express groups in Metro Manila have expressed opposition to the strike, namely: the National Federation of Transport Cooperatives (NFTC), Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (ALTODAP), Liga ng Transportasyon at Operators sa Pilipinas (LTOP), Alliance of Concerned Transport Organization (ACTO), Pasang Masda (PM), Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (FEJODAP), Stop and Go Coalition, Senate Employees Transport Service Cooperative (SETSCO), UV Express National Alliance.
