Timor-Leste has once again approved the Philippines' extradition request to bring back Negros Oriental 3rd District Representative Arnolfo "Arnie" Teves Jr., as confirmed by the Department of Justice (DOJ).
The extradition request was made to allow Teves to face murder charges in a Manila court for the killings of former Governor Raul Degamo and several others.
"We expected no less other than a second grant of extradition by Timor Leste which only affirms the stance of the PH government that there is merit in the request and that they made the right decision the first time around," DOJ said in a statement on December 5.
The DOJ further explained that the second round of extradition hearings stemmed from procedural objections raised by Teves' camp.
These objections were presented as a "late appeal" after he had initially participated fully and voluntarily in the proceedings, only to challenge the process after receiving an "unfavorable decision."
"Fortunately, the judicial system of Timor Leste Court has been consistent with the tenets of fair play and justice considering the positive developments in this case," the DOJ stated.
"To reiterate, the Philippine government as a party in this case, highly commends the legal process of Timor Leste for displaying the efficiency of their justice system," the agency added.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla stated that the approval of the extradition request is a significant victory for the Filipino people and a testament to the current government's unwavering commitment to achieving real-time justice at all costs.
