The government has put a P7,000 medical allowance in place for all public teachers, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced on Wednesday. This sizeable 1,300 percent leap from the initial P500 medical examination allowance provided since 2020 was initiated in a move to promote teachers' welfare.
Executive Order No. 64 s. 2024, signed by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos will be set in motion at the onset of fiscal year 2025, and furnish each eligible government employee, counting public teachers, with a medical allowance as high as P7,000.
The adjusted allowance will serve to fund the cost of health maintenance organization (HMO)-type or insurance coverage benefits, while the previous one was only for diagnostic tests, in accordance with Department Order No. 28 s. 2020.
Additionally, public school teachers have also been granted P5,000 as a tax-free teaching allowance for the school year 2024-2025. The next school year, 2025-2026, and the years after will see this allowance doubled to P10,000, under the Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act or Republic Act 11997 co-authored by DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara while in the Senate.
DepEd also reminded teaching and non-teaching personnel they can file claims under the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS)-issued Personal Accident Insurance (GPAI) policy.
It covers up to P100,000 for accidental death or dismemberment and reimburses as much as P30,000 for injuries.
